Underwater boat coming to the region The Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle is reaching new depths, announcing that a new semi-submersible vessel will be joining its fleet in spring. Nicknamed “Mollymawk,” the 17.8 metre long vessel is described as a “state of the art semi-submersible which allows people of all ages and abilities to explore the undersea worlds.” It will be working in the Tonga Island marine reserve in the Abel Tasman National Park, and will mean that its passengers can look through the kelp

Paul Smith of Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle says this new vessel will allow more people to experience the reserve. “The marine reserve has been in place for 20 years now and the fish life and everything is coming back,” he says. “Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle will transport people to the vessel which is positioned in the reserve and it’ll be run from there.” Prices and an exact arrival date are yet to be confirmed.

Cat lovers will be purring with excitement ahead of this weekend’s National Cat Show. The New Zealand Cat Fancy National Cat Show, which doubles as the Nelson Cat Show’s 40th anniversary, will be held at Saxton Stadium from 9am on Sunday.
It will feature around 150 of the top pedigree cats from around the country. The event had originally been planned to be held at the Trafalgar Centre, but its closure forced a shift to Saxton Stadium. Entry to the cat show is $8 for an adult, $6 for a senior and $4 for a child.

A historic black and white photograph of Queen St has gone up in Village Café, but its owner is hoping someone in the public can put a date on it. The large photograph, which covers most of the wall, is believed to have been taken from the lower end of Queen St, and shows six vehicles parked outside a handful of businesses, including the Post Office. Amber Warren, the café’s owner, inherited the photograph when ANZ Bank closed down across the road. “They were going to put it into storage but we thought we’d have it on display here.” Amber only knows some minor details in regards to the photograph, but wants to find out more. Three girls are pictured, and two of them are regular customers, but even they weren’t aware of an exact year. Skull was from young woman A human skull found by two fishermen in March has been examined and found to be from a Polynesian woman, most likely from before European settlement of Nelson. Mackenzie Rose and her partner found the skull on the edge of the Waimea Estuary, behind Nelson Airport, when they went to go fishing. They called the police who sent the skull, along with some other bone fragments, to Otago University to be examined. Police spokeswoman Barbara

found to be from a Polynesian woman, believed to have been under 30 years of age. “We are now making arrangements for them to be returned to a site dedicated for koiwi at Marsden Valley Cemetery,” she says. Mackenzie said at the time that it was a strange situation. “We were just walking along the estuary when we saw it. We didn’t know if it was real or not, but I picked it up and we could tell right away that it was a real skull.”

Council funding of cycle trail confirmed There is good news for people wanting to ride Tasman’s Great Taste Trail, with Tasman District Council confirming it will retain funding for the next stage of the trail. The draft annual plan attracted more than 80 submissions supporting the project and mayor Richard
Kempthorne says that as a result of the material presented to the TDC, it has committed $300,000 funding for the next 12 months. Which means the next stage of construction from Wakefield through to Spooners Tunnel, as long as other funding partners come on board.

There was always a good chance that Dulcie Liesnham would live a long and happy life after maintaining a healthy, active life style and being blessed with good genes. And that’s exactly what has happened, with Dulcie celebrating her 100th birthday with a singalong and a glass of sherry with family and friends at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village in Stoke last Thursday. Dulcie, who is still sharp as a tack, attributes her longevity to her mother Lucy’s genes and a lifetime of good living. Lucy lived to 102 while Dulcie has always maintained a healthy lifestyle, working hard to bring up her three children and spending countless hours in the garden. “She was always an amazing gardener,” Dulcie’s daughter, Judith Wilkinson of Richmond says. “My parents would spend hours in the garden and everywhere they lived, their garden was always something special people would see their garden and gasp, it was so beautiful.” Dulcie has also often enjoyed a

Dulcie was born in Milton in South Otago and raised on the family farm at Five Rivers in northern Southland before attending Columba College in Dunedin. She married her late husband Tom and had three children, moving to Otapiri
near Winton, Bluff and then lastly, when their children left home, to the Tasman region. Tom and Dulcie had a farm at Stanley Brook and then lived in Motueka, before Dulcie moved to Richmond to be closer to Judith when Tom passed away. Now she lives in the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village. Dulcie has 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

RSA to return WWI medals
First World War medals donated to the Nelson RSA are being given back to the families of the local men and women who earned them. Nelson RSA is now on a search to find the descendants, who could be spread across the country, after the RSA executive voted to hand back the medals to help commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli landings next year. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont says the medals were donated decades ago and he feels it’s the right time to give them back to the fami-

WOMAN SUPPLIED CLASS B DRUG: Nelson Police have last week arrested and charged a 53 year old local woman with unlawful supply of a class B controlled drug. The arrest comes after several months of investigation by police, which culminated in a search warrant and subsequent arrest of the woman. The drugs that were subject to this enquiry were prescription medicines that the woman had legitimately obtained, and it is alleged she has then on sold them. SAIL NELSON WIN TOPS AWARD: Sail Nelson has been named the Royal Yachting Association’s New Zealand Sailing School of the Year 2014. Richard Falk, British-based Training Manager of the RYA, together with Neil Murray, head of RYA New Zealand, presented the award to John and Woodi Moore of Sail Nelson at the RYA Forum held at Coastguard Boating in Auckland’s Westhaven Marina. The award was contested by all RYA sailing and powerboating schools throughout the country. It was last presented in New Zealand in 2010.

Property insights Commission We think it is time for us to tell you that we were the instigators of the reduction of the commission fee to 2.95% (back in 2006) and we are proud of the fact that most commissions are now at the same level. Nelson to host national community patrol seminar A national training seminar will bring together the largest gathering of community patrollers in the country. Close to 275 people are expected to attend the weekend’s event, which includes a training day at Nelson College for Girls, and speeches, AGM and a dinner at the Suburban Club. There are 150 community patrols in New Zealand, and one of the regions each year steps up to host a national training seminar, which enables
members from all community patrols to make sure they are working in a similar fashion. It was announced in 2012 that Nelson would host it in 2014, and Mike Gill of the Richmond Community Patrol is looking forward to having close to 275 people here in the region for it. Special guests coming to the seminar include assistant police commissioner Mike Rusbatch, Graham Bell of Police 10/7 fame and Minister of Police Anne Tolley.

Hope mum launches foundation A charitable foundation set up by Hope mum and cancer survivor Kristin Paterson to support young cancer sufferers is holding its first big fundraising event in Richmond next month. Kristin launched the Whole Lotta Life foundation in October last year because she wanted to help people aged 20-45 get through the challenges she had experienced when she was diagnosed with cancer. The 31 year-old mother of two was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma just after she had given birth to her second child in 2009 and found out first hand that there was a need for a support agency specifically for young cancer sufferers. Kristin, who has now been in remission for almost five years, left her job at the Nelson Provincial Museum to dedicate her life to the charitable foundation. She has organised the foundation’s first annual retreat for patients at Kimi Ora late next month and hopes to provide yoga prescriptions and offer portrait photography as family keepsakes for young cancer sufferers. “The Cancer Society and Hospice do a fantastic job but I found there was a gap in the support available for younger cancers patients. Younger people face a different set of chal-

School hall needed for growing school There’s only so many kids you can fit into one classroom and St Paul’s Catholic School have just about reached their limit. With a role that is expected to grow from 220 pupils to 330, space is getting to be an issue for the school who are now well underway with fundraising for a brand new school hall. Principal John Dorman says the school currently gathers in a classroom that’s not yet occupied but with the role growing, it’s time to build a school hall for assemblies and other big gatherings. “Getting the school in their now at 220 is sort of ‘hold your breath stuff ’ and we can’t put parents in at the same time, so for bigger gatherings like assemblies we have to go to Salisbury School to use the hall over there,” he says. The school come together every Monday morning for half an hour to take part in shared prayer in one of their spare classrooms but weekly assemblies which are normally attended by parents are a logistical nightmare and that means they are only able to hold them twice a term. ber of opportunities for the children and parents are fully supportive of the benefits a large gathering place would bring. John says they have a ball park figure for the building of the hall that is around $200,000 but it could potentially be more. “Realistically we won’t be building it straight away, even with grants and things it’s probably going to take us five years. Some people are saying optimistically two but five is probably more realistic. That’s our target.” St Paul’s new hall will be a multifunctional area for music, sports, assemblies and school prayer and so far the school has managed to raise $25,000. More funds are still needed though and a raffle is underway for everyone that would like to support the school. Prizes include a dinner for six cooked by Matt Bouterey, a 15 minute ride for six people in a Eurocopter, two nights away for two at Golden Bay Hideaway and a package from Baby on the Move including a car seat and toys. Anyone who has had an active relationship with their bank over the past 20-30 years will be able to tell you that things have certainly changed through the years. The biggest change, one could argue, has been an increase in the use of technology by Banks. The introduction of electronic and internet banking has allowed banks to shift from face to face customer interaction, via a high concentration of ‘bricks and mortar’ branches, to centralised call centres, use of computers, and other hand held devices. Some of you may have seen an item on Campbell Live last week looking at the behaviour of patrons in and around Nelson's inner city bars. The story came about after an item based around Auckland bars a few weeks earlier, which showed a situation that would have been all too familiar to Nelsonians a few years back. As area commander, I'm pleased and relieved to see how far we have come in moderating the sort of drunken violence that had unfortunately become a regular feature of Friday and Saturday nights out in Nelson. Police always said that we couldn't change people's behaviour on our own. Working in isolation the best we could hope to do was to be on the spot in time to minimise the damage and catch the offenders. That's simply not good enough as it allows the problem behaviour to continue. I said some time back that finding a solution to the situation would require the support of the wider community and that's where we've made real gains. In Nelson, the hospitality industry, Police, Council, DHB and ACC have all worked together to find solutions to a problem we all share in one way or another. As a result of that collaborative work we have initiatives like mellow yellow and an accord that will see a patron who misbehaves in one bar being trespassed from all inner city bars. I would never be so bold as to suggest we have the problem beat. However, Police officers on the street are definitely seeing less breaches of the liquor ban, less serious violence and less victimisation. We can never take our foot off the pedal with this and police are committed to ensuring we have a highly visible presence in and around the city's bars. We are also committed to fostering the relationships we have with bar owners and their staff to ensure everyone is meeting the expectations of host responsibility under the liquor licensing rules. As the TV item showed, some of the Nelson initiatives are clearly working and that's something we can all take heart from.

Broods vow to return

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz Caleb Nott used to joke about becoming a professional musician, but it’s quickly turned into a reality for him and younger sister Georgia. Under the name Broods, their songs have clocked millions of plays online, they’ve signed international record deals with Capitol and Polydor, toured with Ellie Goulding, and some of the biggest names in the media industry have been singing their praise — so yep, they’re professional musicians alright, and they’re loving every minute. On Saturday night, Broods played their first official show in Nelson since shooting to stardom — a sold-out concert at the Theatre Royal put on by the Nelson Youth and Community Trust in association with Smokefreerockquest. They believe in their own talent but both Caleb and Georgia were surprised by their meteoric rise, which basically snowballed since Bridges was uploaded to their SoundCloud page. “I joked about being a professional musician but never thought it’d actually happen,” Caleb says. He counts seven times they’ve been overseas in the past six months and says it gets “more insane”

Getting up close and personal to the hottest motocross action has never been easier than this weekend. On Saturday and Sunday, the region’s top riders will compete for glory in the Speight’s Ale House Nelson Flat Track Champs in Brightwater. The annual event will see trophies up for grabs and plenty of action on the track. Up to 150 riders are expected to take part and spectator viewing is rarely so good, with a slight hill meaning great views for those who come along to
watch the racing. Food stalls and a fenced off track mean there’s plenty to see and do and all safely, which means the kids can have a ball too. “The beauty of this track is that you can see the whole track from the one spot and we’ll have a commentator on a cherry picker,” says co-organiser Dan Shallcrass. The two trophies up for grabs are the Leith McConchie Memorial Trophy, which will go to the first Nelson rider home in the senior feature race on Sunday afternoon, and the Keith Sinclair trophy is going to the highest point-scoring senior for the weekend. It will be the first time that this trophy has been competed for since 1967. but turned up at the club over the past year, so the club has decided to put it back up for grabs. Flat track racing is extremely popular for riders and spectators, says Dan, with strong numbers in both the junior and ladies sections. “It’s going to be bar-to-bar, fast racing. The great thing with flat tracks is that it’s really close racing and you get a lot of riders banging into each other.” The champs, organised by Sam Millson and Dan, are at Mt Heslington Road. It will be signposted from the Brightwater Motor Inn. Riders wanting to take part can still register at www.nmcc.org.nz. If wet, the champs will be held on July 12 and 13. Racing is from 10am to 4pm each day and entry is by a gold coin.

World famous in Brightwater Neil Bowe is a familiar face in the Brightwater community and a passion for woodchopping has carved out an interesting life for the 83 year old great-grandfather. When asked what made him the axe man he is today he replies that he’s always had an interest in it. “Down the coast as kids we lived in Inangahua and there was bush all around us. The ‘old lady’ had the old wood/coal stove and after school I’d always get an axe, go up the back and cart wood home. I’ve always had a passion for cutting wood. Don’t know what put it there but it was there.” He recalls his first introduction to the sport was at a demonstration meeting at Inangahua Junction when he was a boy. He and some other young lads got the job of stripping the bark off the logs in preparation for chopping. He left the West Coast in 1950 and after six years working up north, Neil settled in Hope and took up work in the bush. His first day on the job in the Moutere Hills was as rough as they come but he still tells the story with a laugh. “The bushman had a big old gnarly tree on the side of the road and he gave me an axe and said ‘here you are Neil, you need to trim it,’ It had big old heavy limbs and the tree was no good for anything but he was having me on and I wasn’t going to give in. I had this new axe that hadn’t even been sharpened, just out of the shop and I hammered away all day with this darn thing and finally got it

When I got home that night my hands were just blisters but it didn’t stop me, it just gave me a bit more passion.” Bush work may have been hard but it was also Neil’s first official introduction into the sport that would become such a big part of his life. In 1959 Neil was approached to help organise chopping at the 1960 Nelson A and P show. The founding of the Nelson Bushcraft Club a year later was the start of his dedication to the administration side of the sport which has been just as important as his success in competitions. Being an axe man has taken him all over the world and earned him many titles, trophies and medals. Nowadays Neil sources axes and saws from wherever he can find them, does

His family continue the tradition of wood chopping with a son and grandson who are both quality wood choppers and two great-grandsons with their axes hanging in granddads shed, or Chop Chop as he’s known. Neil admits he’s had quite an interesting life,“I’m getting a bit long in the tooth now but I still go out there now and pull the saw. It’s good exercise, I’m only 83. I’ve got my 90th birthday booked so I’ve got to keep going for that.”

Our Civil Defence Emergency Management Group (CDEM) plays a vital role within the community and the opening of their new premises in Richmond means the efficiency of their response to small and major events is greatly increased. The CDEM has the important role of helping the community understand its risks, making plans so we are ready to respond to emergencies, leading the response to emergency events and coordinating the recovery afterwards. The Nelson Tasman Civil Defence Emergency Management Group is a partnership between Nelson City and Tasman District Councils with the support of key partner organisations who are involved in the delivery of emergency management including Police, Fire, Ambulance, the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, the Ministry of Social Development and the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management. Previously the Nelson Tasman CDEM Group operated out of the main chamber of one of the councils, Nelson City council being the primary designated facility. Over the years they have used both Nelson and the Tasman District council along with a small office located in the Trafalgar Centre. “Fortunately the funding and construction of this facility has enabled us to move to a much better situation,” says Roger Ball, manager of the Nelson Tasman CDEM. “All of those other facilities were sub-optimal because they took a

A purpose built facility is also an extremely important element when it comes to organising and co-ordinating a first response. The ground floor of the new building is the CDEM Group’s operations centre while the second storey houses smaller tenancies. From the start, Civil Defence worked with architects, Arthouse, to design a layout that sees a central “operations room” surrounded by other offices and rooms. The main operations room is a large area with modular tables, TV screens, projectors and computers and is a place where people can gather, connect to the outside world and plan together to respond to an emergency. Surrounding rooms contain meeting rooms, offices and utility areas. The most

The whole ground floor is heavily reinforced concrete and then the top floor is a really lightweight timber structure. It’s not bullet proof but if anything’s going to be left standing it should be that,” says Jorgen Anderson of Arthouse Architects. The building also incorporates a number of other features that allows it to remain largely resilient in the face of an emergency situation. With a generator to keep them going if the power fails and a 5000L water tank, their aim is to keep functioning throughout the first response to the recovery process. Nelson weightlifters have come away with six medals from the South Island Championship in Christchurch over the weekend, with four of the lifters picking up gold medals. Richmond’s Jaydene Nepia took out the junior 48kg women’s class with a total of 99kg from her snatch and clean and jerk. Jaydene set a New Zealand junior clean and jerk record with her lift of 56kg, which broke her own record by 1kg.
Other winners included Luke Smith in the junior men’s 77kg with a total of 213kg, Christian Jessop in the junior men’s 85kg with 225kg, and Abby Cederman in the 75kg senior women’s class with a total lift of 142kg. It was difficult to tell whether the Nelson Mountainbike Club’s Six-Hour Mid-Winter Breakout at Kaiteriteri on Sunday was a fancy dress party or mountainbike race - although the answer was probably a bit of both. Four hundred and seventyfive riders entered the popular event at the Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park and, while most were there for the racing, it was the fancy dressers who stole the show. “The fancy dress is going up a notch every year,” race organiser Wayne Pool says. “There were so many amazing costumes it was a really tough decision for judges to pick the winner. “Last year Brian Grant won it easily with his spaceman suit. Brian won it again this year but it was much closer.’’ Brian’s Viking costume, complete with double-bladed axe, and Liz Watson’s dragon teamed up in their How to Tame Your Dragon outfits to win the fancy dress ahead of Warrick Spence’s Sergeant Pepper and his daughter Mandy Plumtree’s Wonder Woman. There were also clowns, cows, Little Red Riding Hoods, Evel Knievels and angels on bikes.

The father and son team of Mark and Henry Jaine led the charge of the lycra-wearing speedsters blasting around the five kilometre circuit 19 times in 5 hours 37 minutes. It was a top performance by Henry who consistently posted 15 minute laps in his first race since breaking his collarbone in a road race eight weeks ago. Henry will be hoping that bad things happen in threes after earlier breaking his pelvis in a crash in December and his hip in another accident last August. “I had three weeks off after breaking my collar-
bone and then it was onto the wind trainer. I’ll just be doing a few more mountainbike races rather than getting back into the big bunches on my road bike so I can get my confidence back.” The Mighty Whiteys, Ash and Naomi Whitehead and Dan Busch, were second and Richard Ussher and Scott Barr third. However, one of the most impressive performances of the day came from Warrick’s 76-year-old mother Jill Charlton who teamed up with her husband Tony, 70, to ride six laps.

There’s plenty to be happy about at Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers, with both of their senior teams at the top of the table heading into club day this Saturday. The Car Company division one side looks certain to hold the top spot going into the semi-finals in three weeks time, while the division two side have snuck ahead of Waimea Old Boys on points differential and still have a game in hand. All teams from the club will be at home on club day, starting with 240 kids kicking off at Lord Rutherford Park in the morning, before the intermediate 1 side plays the curtain raiser at the Brightwater Domain at 12noon. From there, the division two side will play third place Riwaka at 1:15 before Wanderers take on Moutere in their final Bayleys Tasman Trophy hit-out. The intermediate 2 team will also play the Brightwater Domain, their game kicks off at 5pm and
will be played under lights. Division one co-coach and player Daniel Perrin says the support has been exceptional again this year and his team was looking at showing their appreciation with another top performance on club day. “Wherever we’ve travelled the usual faces have followed us and I think we owe it to them. It’s a pretty passionate community out here and we’ve grown the club into something pretty unique,” he says. “From where it’s at, at the moment compared to where we were three years ago it’s pretty special. The team has already spoken about it, and we know what this community means to us.” Wanderers are into their third year back in the division one competition, and having been beaten finalists last year, Daniel is still confident his team can go one better this year. “You’ve gotta be mate, that’s what you play for isn’t it? If you don’t back yourself to win then we wouldn’t be here.”

JAB chairman Ian Biggs says club day is a great opportunity for families and friends to support more than one grade. “It’s a great opportunity for all grades to be centralised in one area where family and friends can get along and see more than one grade play. It’s a great day for fundraising and an excellent way to bring the whole club together as one,” he says. “We will have many club seniors moving through the grades during the morning before their games, helping out with games and

Jacks were up 9–4 before Richmond slotted six unanswered goals to go into the first break 10–9 in front. Jacks wing defence, Lavinia Buchanan toiled to apply pressure, while keeper Jordan Webby was always a threat for any wayward pass. Richmond went into the major break 24–19 up after another run of five unanswered goals. Richmond played their best netball in the third period when they outscored Jacks 13–7. Eight spots to fill in Makos squad There are still eight spots up for grabs in the Tasman Makos squad, but coach Kieran Keane says he will keep an “open mind” when deciding whether they will come from inside the region or from out of town. Already 22 players have contracts for the upcoming ITM Cup season, with just three of those being new faces – Waitohi prop Ross Gledenhuys, Central hooker Jesse MacDonald and Waimea Old Boys blindside flanker Peter Samu. But Kieran says, with eight spots still available – covering a variety of positions – more new faces are a possibility when the final squad is announced on August 4. “We have moved up to the Premiership so we would be unable to compete with a squad of 26 because of the draw and the quality of the opposition,” Kieran says. “Last season we were very fortunate to get away with using 26 players, and can’t risk it again this season. “We are in a semi professional environment so we have an open mind. Public Notice of Alcohol Licensing Applications Applications for new and renewed alcohol licences are now being publicly advertised on the Council website. The use of a website for public notices is allowed under the new Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, and is good for the community and for businesses. The public notices remain accessible to everyone online rather than just appearing sporadically in the local newspaper. This allows the community to view the public notices at their leisure on the website. There are also links and information for people wanting to object to an application. Site notices will still be displayed on the premises to alert the public to an application. Businesses applying for an alcohol licence will benefit from this service as it eliminates the expense of advertising. This is welcome as the fees for licences have generally increased across the board. Public Notices of applications can be viewed at www.tasman.govt.nz/link/alcohol-licensing-applications Applications for licences are decided by the new District Licensing Committee. The decisions are now also available online at www.tasman.govt.nz/council/council-meetings/other-committees/district-licensingcommittee-meetings/

Tasman District Council proposes to review its Dog Control Bylaw and associated Dog Control Policy. We encourage feedback from anyone with an interest in the proposed bylaw, with a consultation period over five weeks to allow plenty of time for you to make a considered submission. The submission procedure is detailed below. This “summary of information” is made to fulfil the purposes of Sections 83(1)(a)(ii) and 89 of the Local Government Act 2002 and summarises the Statement of Proposal to review the existing Dog Control Bylaw. The majority of the existing bylaw is carried over to the proposed replacement bylaw, however a number of new provisions have been proposed in response to issues raised with the Council. To assess these issues a workshop was held on 3 April 2014 between Council staff and Councillors to consider the viability of suggested changes/additions to the existing bylaw. The proposed bylaw should be construed as being entirely new and submissions may be made on any element of the bylaw not just the proposed changes. However, it may be helpful to highlight the key changes proposed to the existing Dog Control Bylaw following the Council workshop: 1. The area covered by the dog ban in Takaka to be increased as shown in Schedule 3 of the proposed bylaw. Access to Commercial Street will be permitted for dog owners outside of normal business hours i.e. 9.00 am – 5.00 pm on weekdays. 2. The Jimmy Lee Track (Richmond) to be made a leash control area. The area affected runs from Jimmy Lee Creek Hill Street/Milne Place entrance to Hill Street (Hart Road) entrance, see map in Schedule 1 of the proposed Bylaw. 3. That, due to potential “bird strike” issues at Nelson Airport, the area of Sand Island under Tasman District Council control becomes a dog prohibited area, see Schedule 3 of the proposed bylaw. 4. The Tasman’s Great Taste Trail Bylaw 2012 has various controls on dogs at different parts of the trail. Clause 20 has been added to the existing Dog Control Bylaw and reads as follows: 20.1 The Tasman Great Taste Trail Bylaw 2012 prohibits dogs from certain sections of the trail.
